Stafford Township Recognized as a 2025 “Healthy Town"!
🏆🌿 Stafford Township Recognized as a 2025 “Healthy Town”! 🌿🏆
We are proud to share that Stafford Township has once again been recognized by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute through the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign as a 2025 Healthy Town!
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE:
"Stafford has achieved a Healthy Town designation for the third year in a row. Through the Mobile Community Outreach Event, Stafford brings health and wellness resources directly to residents, reducing barriers for underserved populations. By making programs and services more accessible, the Township ensures that all community members have opportunities to engage in healthy living, strengthening both individual well-being and community connection."
"Although Stafford Township had a commitment to health prior to the participation in the MWC, these past five years have shown a true commitment from our Township as we continue to diligently focus on the programs that keep our residents healthy and well,” said Mayor Robert Henken. “The MWC has undoubtedly helped our Township examine and improve the local initiatives that can support the members of our community on a physical, mental, and spiritual level. Whether it’s our annual Green Fair that promotes healthy living, the Pathfinders program, our many various educational seminars throughout the year, or even continually investing in our open space and recreational areas, Stafford Township is prepared to continue our participation in the amazing MWC for years to come.”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
This achievement would not be possible without the dedication of our staff, volunteers, community partners, and residents who continue to support and participate in wellness initiatives throughout the Township.
👏 Congratulations to everyone who helps make Stafford a healthier place to live, work, age, and play!

Stafford Tide Gauge Ribbon Cutting
Ribbon Cutting Celebration – Stafford Township Tide Gauge Project
Mayor Henken and the Stafford Township Council were proud to host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Township’s first Tide Gauge installation - an exciting step forward in local resiliency efforts!
Despite the gray skies, representatives from Sustainable Jersey, Drexel University, and our dedicated project partners came out to commemorate this impactful milestone. This project, made possible through a $5,000 Sustainable Communities Grant from Atlantic City Electric and administered by Sustainable Jersey, with additional support generously provided by Manasquan Bank, reflects the power of collaboration in preparing our community for a more resilient future.
Installation was led by researchers Dr. Montalto and Dr. Shakya from Drexel University, with hands-on collaboration from local student professionals from Marine Academy of Technology & Environmental Science (MATES), as well as Stafford Township's dedicated Department of Public Works employees. The New Jersey Coastal Coalition also provided technical assistance, further underscoring the regional commitment to shared environmental goals.
💡 Why it Matters: This tide gauge, installed in the Beach Haven West section of town, provides real-time data on tidal fluctuations, helping us better understand flood risks, storm surges, and other climate issues. The information will be used to inform future planning and emergency management strategies.
💬 As Mayor Henken said, “Without grants like this, we would not be able to do more for the community, as we have done. We look forward to using this data to inform future projects and grants that we apply for.”
🌿 This project is just one of many sustainability initiatives led by the Stafford Township Green Team, including our Green Fair, cleanups, composting workshops, and our Mayor’s Wellness Campaign.

Ocean County Health Department Press Release
For Immediate Release:
Date: 5/20/25
Tick Season Is Here - Protect Yourself Now from Lyme Disease
(Toms River, NJ) – As spring weather draws more people outdoors, the Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) is issuing an important reminder: the risk of Lyme disease is real - and rising.
“People enjoying their backyards, local parks, or hiking trails need to understand that Lyme disease isn’t just a nuisance—it can have serious, long-term health effects if not diagnosed and treated early,” said Daniel Regenye, OCHD Public Health Coordinator/Health Officer. “The blacklegged tick, or deer tick, is the only species in Ocean County known to transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease - and it only takes one bite.”
Tick bites are deceptively easy to miss. In most cases, a blacklegged tick must be attached for at least 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease. That is why prompt, daily tick checks are critical, on both people and pets.
“Don’t wait for a rash or flu-like symptoms,” added Regenye. “Early detection and treatment can prevent the infection from spreading and causing serious complications to your joints, heart, and nervous system. Early antibiotic treatment is often highly effective.”
Know the Early Warning Signs of Lyme Disease:
- Bull’s-eye rash
- Fever
- Chills
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle and joint aches
The latest data from the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) shows that Lyme disease remains a significant public health concern in the Garden State. In 2023, over 7,200 cases of Lyme disease were reported across New Jersey, underscoring the persistent risk posed by tick-borne illnesses.
Jennifier Bacchione, Ocean County Commissioner and Liaison to the Ocean County Board of Health, advises, “Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne illness in the U.S., and New Jersey ranks among the top states for reported cases. The best defense is a good offense. Take prevention seriously before symptoms start.”
TICK SAFETY TIPS TO FOLLOW IMMEDIATELY:
- Treat gear and clothing with permethrin (0.5%) or buy pre-treated outdoor gear.
- Check clothing before coming indoors. Tumble-dry on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks.
- Inspect pets and gear—ticks can hitch a ride on your dog, coat, or backpack.
- Shower promptly within two hours to wash off ticks and reduce risk.
- Perform a full-body tick check using a mirror. Focus on these areas:
- Under arms
- In/around ears
- Inside the belly button
- Behind knees
- In/around hair
- Between legs
- Around the waist

Ocean County residents can bring their ticks to the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, located at 1623 Whitesville Road, Toms River, for identification. Call 732-349-1246 for more information.

Sustainable Communities Grant Program
Sustainable Communities Grant Program November, 2, 2024
Stafford Township Awarded $5,000 Resiliency Grant
Stafford Township, NJ – The Township of Stafford was awarded a $5,000 grant to support a resiliency project in the community. This funding is made available through Atlantic City Electric's Sustainable Communities Grant program, which provides funding to support open space preservation, improvements to parks and recreation resources, environmental conservation and innovative community resiliency projects. Atlantic City Electric, together with its program administrator Sustainable Jersey, have chosen seven local municipalities to receive $35,000 in funds. To date, the program has provided $310,000 in grants to South Jersey municipalities.
Funding this year will help municipalities provide emergency services, create new trails, educate the community, and provide more access to clean water.
“Thank you to Atlantic City Electric and Sustainable Jersey for funding Stafford Township’s grant application. As Mayor, I have tried to look to the future of the Township with our plans and projects. Without grants like this, we would not be able to do more for the community, as we have done. We look forward to putting the tide gauge in place and using that data for future projects and grants that we apply for, thank you!” – Robert Henken, Mayor, Stafford Township, Ocean
This funding will support the installation of a tidal gauge, a valuable tool that will help make the Township of Stafford more resilient by providing essential data on tidal patterns. This project is a big step forward in the Township’s efforts to protect and strengthen our community and will assist with future funding opportunities for similar projects.
“With these grants, New Jersey communities can prepare for environmental changes by completing projects that build local resilience and provide access to our natural resources,” said Randall Solomon, executive director of Sustainable Jersey. “In partnership with Atlantic City Electric we are creating more resilient communities for current and future generations.”
Stafford Township is dedicated to advancing sustainability and resilience through its program with Sustainable Jersey. Notable projects include efforts to improve local water quality, develop a comprehensive Resiliency Plan, and provide inclusive programs through the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, benefiting a wide range of residents, from seniors to individuals with special needs. These initiatives are designed to enhance the quality of life and strengthen the health of the community and resiliency against environmental challenges.
Central to these efforts is the Stafford Green Team, which leads the charge on community education and engagement in sustainable practices. Through composting and rain barrel workshops, as well as the annual Green Fair, they empower residents with practical tools for environmental stewardship. The Green Team also organizes regular cleanups and explores waste reduction strategies, reinforcing Stafford Township's commitment to a cleaner future for all.
